How to Check if your Heat Pump or Air Conditioner is Receiving Power

To check if your Heat Pump or Air Conditioner is receiving power, follow these easy steps:

  1. You will need a multi-meter for this test, these can be purchased online or at most home improvement stores.
  2. Locate your disconnect box, open it, and pull out the disconnect. Be careful, as the box will still have power running into it.
  3. Turn on you multi-meter and set it to measure Ohms. (Ω symbol)
  4. Touch the probes from your multi-meter to each end of the fuse inside your disconnect box.
  5. If your multi-meter shows a reading, that means the fuse is good. If it shows “0” or “OL” then that means the fuse needs to be replaced.
  6. Some disconnect boxes contain one or more backup fuses, so make sure to test all fuses inside the box.
  7. Insert the disconnect back into the box and close it, making sure the box is tightly sealed.
