Is Your Furnace Not Heating?

It can be frustrating to experience issues with your heating system, especially at a time when you need it most. Below are some common reasons your furnace may not be igniting and what you can do to resolve the issue. As always, you can also contact Vanport Mechanical of Vancouver WA. Our technicians are highly skilled in residential HVAC systems and would happily inspect and repair your furnace so your family can be cozy and comfortable once again.
Is the Power On?
Make sure you have the furnace’s power switch flipped to “on.” It should be inside or next to the furnace cabinet.
Look for a Flame
The first thing you should look for is a flame. If there is no flame the pilot light, or hot surface ignitor may have gone out. No flame could also be an issue with fuel supply, if you’re sure the gas is tuned on there could be a problem with the gas valve itself. If you do see a flame, and the furnace is igniting you are likely experiencing another furnace issue.
Gas Furnace Not Working? Check the Circuit Breakers
Checking the circuit breakers should be one of the first things to check. Make sure they are all flipped to the “on” position. Even if you have a gas furnace, parts of your system still requires electricity. If the circuit trips again, you may have a short in the electrical system and if that’s the case, you’ll want to contact a technician.
Furnace Not Heating, Check the Thermostat
Your furnace and your thermostat work together. If your thermostat is not powered on or is not in “heating mode” your furnace won’t operate. So make sure your thermostat does have power and to test out if this was the problem, adjust the temperature to about 10 degrees hotter than your home’s current temperature. If the furnace still doesn’t turn on, your problem wasn’t the thermostat.
Furnace Won’t Turn On? Check Your Air Filter
If your air filter is clogged with debris, your furnace will not turn on. Air filters need to be replaced regularly. Depending on the filter size they need to be replaced every 3 months to 12 months.
Furnace Running But No Heat? Check the Belt
If your furnace is running but not providing heat another reason could be a broken belt. Your furnace has a belt inside that connects the motor and the blower. Turn off the power to your furnace and shut off the gas valve. Remove the door on the furnace cabinet to inspect the belt. If it does need replacing, take a look at the number that is stamped on the belt and find a replacement for it.
